Survey of Intelligent Vehicle Applications Worldwide

ABSTRACT

The field of intelligent vehicles is rapidly growing worldwide, both in the diversity of applications and in increasing interest in the automotive, truck, public transport, industrial, and military sectors. These systems offer the potential for significant enhancements in safety and operational efficiency for all types of vehicle operations. As one component of the Intelligent Transportation Systems field, Intelligent Vehicle (IV) systems use sensing and intelligent algorithms to understand the environment immediately around the vehicle, to either assist the driver in vehicle operations (driver assistance) or to fully control the vehicle (automation). This paper provides an overview of IV activities around the world: following a description of generic applications, activities in each of four vehicle platform types are described: passenger cars, heavy trucks, public transport, and special vehicles (which includes highway maintenance, industrial vehicles, and military systems). For each area, specific applications and related benefits are described, as well as major projects and testing/deployment activities. In the summary section, deployment paths and timelines are discussed that take advantage of the synergy of these activities.
