There is increasing awareness of the  positive impact that AI, robotics, and machine learning will have on developing countries. The fields provide opportunities for social and economic empowerment but they also pose some significant challenges.
+
Three questions arise: What role will AI, robotics, and machine learning play, how can Africa best exploit the opportunities that intelligent automation and cognitive robotics have to offer, and how can Africa offset the threats posed by global factors?

Some of these issues are discussed in [http://www.vernon.eu/publications/19_Vernon_RAM.pdf Robotics and Artificial Intelligence in Africa], [https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/8931075 IEEE Robotics & Automation Magazine, Vol. 26, No. 4, pp. 131-135, December 2019] and in a chapter [http://vernon.eu/publications/2021_Alupo_et_al.pdf Realizing the Potential of AI in Africa: It All Turns on Trust], in a forthcoming book, Towards Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence Systems, M. <!-- CINDY stands for '''Ci'''rcular '''N'''etwork '''Dy'''namics.  It is in its early state of development and is based on many other cognitive architectures, especially the iCub cognitive architecture which was never fully realized.  The long-term goal is to design and implement an emergent artificial cognitive system that builds on the principles of growth and development through circular causality, drawing on many of the principles of the fields of Enaction,  Systems Dynamics, and Second-order Cybernetics. -->
